You know those Tuscan villages you read and dream about, the ones with a village piazza right out of the pages of a romantic novel? Greve is one of those villages, the of the wine-growing region of Chianti (between Florence and Sienna), and host of Chianti’s largest wine fair.
It’s a smaller village, but manages to keep itself busy all year round. There are art, ceramic, antique and fashion boutiques alongside the more traditional village shops. And if you’re looking for a base from which to explore Chianti and Tuscany (and want something a little smaller than the more metropolitan Florence), there are plenty of accommodation options.

Shops around the outside of the piazza in Greve in Chianti
Around the outside of the main piazza are a number of medieval buildings, some going back as far as the fourteenth century. Exploring the shops under the arcade around the outside will challenge your budget! Teddy ate at a wonderful restaurant at the end of the piazza, the Ristorante Il Portico, and can highly recommend it.
The annual wine fair, the Chianti Classico, occurs every year on the second weekend of September and the preceding Thursday and Friday. There are hundreds of samples from local wine and olive merchants, and wine-tasting aplenty.
